Louisville Pounds Minerva in Extras, Hollifield Throws JV No-No
Louisville 9, Minerva 5, 8 innings
The Leopards tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the seventh before pounding out 5 runs in the top of the eighth to take the game from Minerva 9-5 in extra innings.
Jon Crank blasted two hits and drove in three runs for the Leopards. He drove in Mike Kelly in the top of the seventh to knot the game at 4 and also provided a 2-run single in the eighth to put Louisville up 9-4.
Louisville first took the lead in extra innings on Connor Ruffier’s bunt single that brought home Jordan Hughes to make it 5-4 Leps. Riley Groves’ sac fly two batters later brought home Joey Duckworth, which proved to be the winning run in the contest. Crank’s two out single followed a few batters later that scored both Kyle White and Groves.
On the mound, Dillon Stertzbach pitched 6 solid innings and struck out 10 batters. Only 1 of the 4 runs he gave up were earned. Groves pitched the final two innings in relief and retired 6 of the 8 batters he faced, while only surrendering one run in the last of the eighth.
The Leopards first three runs came in the opening two innings. Kelly singled home White in the first inning to put Louisville on the board first. The Lions tied the game in the bottom half of the inning, but Louisville got two more in the following at-bat. Groves was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring home Duckworth. Then, Kelly hit a sac fly to score Ruffier.
The Leopards have now taken the last 9 meetings against Minerva and have won 13 of the last 14 against the Lions overall. The two classic arch-rivals will meet again on Thursday at Louisville.
