Louisville Drops Road Game on West Branch Walk-Off – Baseball

West Branch Warriors Baseball Field Scoreboard

West Branch 4, Louisville 3

The Louisville Leopards Varsity Baseball Team fell to the host West Branch Warriors 4-3 Thursday Evening on the campus of West Grove Appliance Alliance Ohio AdBranch High School. With the loss, Louisville drops to an even 2-2 on the season and starts 0-2 in league play.

Pitching dominated the first six innings of the contest and West Branch held a 2-0 advantage heading into the final frame. Warriors Pitcher Gino Sabatine gave up a lead-off single to Tyler Adams at the start of the game, but retired the next 18 Leopards batters consecutively.

Nathan Mongiardo broke the spell with a single to right field to start the Louisville seventh inning. Two pitches later, Casey Nau reached base via error and Mongiardo advanced to third base on the play. After a strikeout, Brody Hahn hit a fly ball to right that was misplayed allowing Mongiardo to score from third. Nau was thrown out at home attempting to tie the contest on the same play.

Brendan Hoffman kept the Leopards hopes alive by reaching base on the third West Branch error of the inning. Then, Anthony Carpico Beatty's Sports Fall 2016 Louisville Leopards Blue Hatwas hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Cameron Prasco stepped in next and hit the first pitch he saw. The hard hit ground ball found its way through the middle of the infield, and both Hahn and the pinch-running Bryce Zuppe scored on the play. Stunningly, Louisville claimed a 3-2 lead.

The elated feeling in the Leopards dugout would be short-lived as the Warriors rallied in the last of the seventh. Tyler DeShields doubled to left and scored the game-tying run on Josh Stahler’s sacrifice fly two at-bats later. With two outs, Logan Metzger drew a walk after loading the count full. Finally, Cole Bates hit a walk-off double to left allowing Metzger to score the game-winning run from first.

Despite the loss, Louisville Starter Jordan Shearer pitched a complete game, gave up 4 runs on just 5 hits, and struck out 3. Sabatine also pitched the entire game for West Branch, gave up 0 earned runs on 3 hits, and fanned 7.

UP NEXT: The Leopards will next host the GlenOak Golden Eagles on Saturday, April 1 at 5:00 PM. JV will be on the road t GlenOak at the same time.
