PREVIEW

The Battle for Route 44 will take place Friday in the first game ever played on Ravenna’s new Blue Smurf Turf at Portage Community Bank Stadium. Back in 2010, the Leopards opened the new Louisville Leopards Stadium against the visiting Ravens. Ravenna gave Louisville a fight, but the Leopards prevailed 37-34 on a last second field goal by Jaron Lohmeyer. The Ravens will look to defend their new field the same way with their first victory of the season. The Leopards will look to stay undefeated in their first game on the road. This is a Division III, Region 7 matchup you will not want to miss.

LEOPARDS

OFFENSE: Quarterback Connor Zwick and the Leopards offense opened up the passing game more last week against North Canton. Zwick is 14 of 24 (58.3%) passing this season for 177 yards and 2 touchdowns this season. His main target has been Andy Minster who has caught 10 passes for 121 yards (12.1 Avg.) and a touchdown. Bryce Mathie also caught two passes last week including a key 26 yard completion that setup a score. Kyle Bast also caught a touchdown pass in traffic and Alex Hollifield will look to make a big impact this week on the blue turf. Look for runningback Walter Schrock to add to his 32 carries for 91 yards this season.

DEFENSE: The Leopards defense has surrendered 233 yards (157 Passing, 76 Rushing) and 11.5 points per contest. Hoover converted on 4 of 17 (23%) third down conversions last week, but Louisville Beatty's Sports White Polo Adallowed the Vikings to convert on 3 of 4 fourth down conversions. The Leopards defensive line that includes Dylan Kline, Cole McElroy, Cory Neff, and Dale Welsh has helped generate 4 sacks for Louisville this season. Linebackers Josh Brown, Frankie Falcone, and Zach Shea made their presence known in the visiting backfield last week as well. Lewis Adkins, Bryce Mathie, AJ Minster, and Garrett Yoder are all capable of making big plays and creating turnovers in the secondary.

SPECIAL TEAMS: AJ Minster made his mark on Special Teams last week by recovering a fumble on a wild snap and making the game-winning tackle on the Vikings botched extra point. Kicker Jordan Hughes is a perfect 2 for 2 on field goal attempts and 3 for 3 on extra point kicks. His second extra point kick last week against Hoover proved to be the difference in the contest. Hughes has proven his reliability and hit from as far as 47 yards in scrimmages earlier this year. Connor Zwick has averaged 38 yards on 11 punts this season. He blasted a 58 yard punt last week against Hoover and pinned Canfield inside the 1 yard line in week one. Garrett Yoder has averaged 8.3 yards on 7 punt returns this season with his longest return being 34 yards. Yoder has also averaged 19.0 yards on two kick returns this season with his longest return being 27 yards.
