Louisville 28, Perry 12

The Louisville Leopards downed the host Perry Panthers 28-12 to finish their perfect run through the Federal League back on November 15, 1971.

After a scoreless first quarter, Louisville got on the board first when Quarterback John Doerschuk hit Doug Shook for a 56 yard touchdown pass. The score capped a 6 play, 81 yard drive to put the Leopards ahead 7-0 heading into the half.

Perry would control the third quarter of play in snapping the ball on 17 of the 24 plays in the period. Bruce Burkhardt’s 2 yard touchdown run put the Panthers within 7-6 at the end of the third.

Louisville would take command of the contest in the fourth as they found the endzone twice in a span of 2:50. On the first play of the final quarter, Halfback Gary Dickerhoof fooled the defense by airing out a pass. Barry Emerick caught the throw and shook off a Perry defender for the 43 yard touchdown.

The Panthers next possession ended with Leopards Defensive End Rob Hackley returning an interception for another 43 yard score. “We’ve looked at all our game films and Hackley is probably the best defensive end in the area,” Louisville Head Coach Paul Starkey said of his star defender who scored for the third time of the season (two safeties previously). “He seems to have the knack to know whether to make the interception or just knock the ball down…10 points is pretty good for a defensive end.”

Another Halfback pass from Tim Wallace to Dave Mazzan gave the Leopards two more points on the conversion try to put them in complete command at 22-6.

Perry did not die easy though as they answered with an 8 play, 68 yard drive ending with a Jerry Klick’s 29 yard touchdown reception from Doug Kaylor. However, their conversion pass failed leaving Louisville ahead two scores at 22-12.

The Leopards pounded out all but 14 seconds of the clock with their final 14 play drive ending with Doerschuck’s 3 yard touchdown run. Louisville out-gained Perry 325-246 in total yardage which included a 180-106 advantage of the ground. Ken Kuhn finished with 85 yards on the ground.
