Tyler Adams Louisville Leopards Baseball Vs. Salem Quakers 2016

Louisville 6, Dover 2, 8 Innings

The Louisville Leopards earned a 6-2 extra inning victory over the host Dover Tornadoes in the season opener Saturday 's Leopard Baseball MomAfternoon at Dover City Park.

Louisville trailed Dover 2-1 at the start of the seventh inning. Brody Hahn started off the frame by drawing a five pitch walk. Before another pitch was fired, Hahn advanced to second base when a pickoff attempt led to a Tornadoes error. On the next pitch, Brendan Hoffman singled to left field advancing Hahn to third base. Finally, Anthony Carpico laid a bunt down the first baseline to sacrifice Hahn to the plate in tying the game at 2-2.

The Tornadoes put 2 on with 2 outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. However, Leopards pitcher Jack Davis struck out Dover’s Zach Yackey to end the the threat and force extra innings.

Louisville erupted for four runs in the top of the eighth inning to take complete control of the contest. Just like Hahn in the seventh, Adams drew a 5-pitch walk to start the frame. Two pitchers later, he swiped second base for his third steal of the contest. A groundout by Nathan Mongiardo advanced Adams to third base and Casey Nau delivered a single to center to bring him around for the go-ahead score.

The other three Leopards runs all came with 2 outs. Hoffman reached on an error scoring Nau from third. Carpico was Grove Appliance Alliance Ohio Adhit by a pitch on a full count to load the bases after that. Then Cam King delivered the knockout blow by pounding a 2-run single to right field, which ripped the game wide open at 6-2.

Davis finished off the Tornadoes in the last of the eighth with the help of a Adams to Hoffman 6-3 double play. Davis pitched four scoreless innings in relief, gave up just a single hit, and earned his first career varsity victory. Starter Jordan Shearer pitched the first four innings, gave up 1 earned run on 3 hits, and struck out a pair for Louisville.

Casey Nau and Corey White both finished 2-for-4 at the dish to lead the Leopards who pounded out 9 hits as a team. Louisville’s first run came when Mongiardo singled home Adams to break the scoreless tie in the top of the third.

Dover was led by Brandon Troyer who batted a perfect 3-for-3 and recorded an RBI single in the bottom of the third. The Tornadoes swirled into the lead when Drue Nolen reached on an error scoring Kooper Smith in the bottom of the fourth.

Louisville and Dover have opened up the season against each other in all of the past five seasons. The series is an even 2-2 in these match-ups with one suspended contest that was never finished in 2014. This is the Leopards first win at Dover since they defeated the Tornadoes 7-6 in the second game of a double header back on April 19, 2008.
