Louisville Leopards at Canton South Wildcats 1989 Football Highlights
Louisville 20, Canton South 17
The Louisville built a 20-0 halftime lead and withstood host Canton South’s furious rally to win 20-17 back on September 2, 1989.
Leopards Quarterback Rob Arnold finished 10 of 24 passing for 144 Yards and two touchdown passes to Mark Sanders and Todd Henne. The Arnold to Henne combination was also good for the only Louisville point after conversion of the night.
Bucky Hall also carried the ball 17 times for 91 yards and scored on a 9 yard touchdown run to lead the Leopards ground attack.
The Wildcats rushing game was led by Vic Chavers who rushed 19 times for 123 yards. His 31 yard touchdown run in the third quarter cut the deficit to 20-7.
In the fourth quarter, Canton South got to within a single score after Greg Kimble found Gibson for a 19 yard touchdown pass. Kimble also ran in the conversion attempt to make it 20-15.
Backed up late, the Leopards elected to take a safety with 2:00 remaining rather than give the Wildcats prime field position. It paid off as South only managed to drive to the Louisville 20 before turning the ball over on downs in their final possession.
