My Fit Life Personal Trainer AdThe Louisville Leopards Varsity Football Team fell to the host Canfield Cardinals 21-14 in the season opener Friday Night at Bob Dove Field.

Quarterback Colton Jones completed 28 of 46 passes for 328 yards and threw a touchdown to lead the Leopards offense. He completed five or more passes to four different receivers. Jones’ top targets included Jared Mathie who made 9 catches for 128 yards and Davis Burick who recorded 5 receptions for 72 yards.

Jones connected on a fourth quarter touchdown pass to Bryce Zuppe from 10 yards out to trim the Cardinals lead to 21-14 with 2:38 left to play. The score was setup by a 60 yard completion from Jones to Mathie followed by a 15 yard completion from Jones to Ryan Pukys. Zuppe would finish with 6 catches for 44 yards and Pukys made 5 grabs for 61 yards.

With just one timeout left, Louisville’s last hope was recovering an onside kick. But the kick bounced out of bounds past the right sideline and the Cardinals offense ran out the clock the rest of the way.

Canfield was led by Quarterback Max Dawson who accounted for 221 yards and 3 scores. Dawson was 10 of 15 passing for 104 yards and completed 2 first quarter touchdown passes to Wide Receiver Matt Zaremski. Dawson also carried the ball 21 times for 117 yards and scored on a 10 yard touchdown run with 9:59 left in the fourth quarter to give the Cardinals a 21-7 lead.

Zaremski made 6 catches for 58 yards. He broke open for a 31 yard touchdown catch early on in the first quarter. That score came two plays after Inside Linebacker Tyler Stein popped the ball free and into the hands of Defensive Back Cole Morell who returned it 13 yards to the Leopards 27. Zaremski’s other touchdown grab came from 12 yards out on 4th-and-2 to give Canfield a 14-0 first quarter lead.

Louisville out-gained Canfield 378-281, but the Cardinals held a distinct 177-50 edge on the ground. Max Hartline led the Leopards rushing attack with 11 carries for 50 yards. He also scored from a yard away in the third quarter to cap off a 13 play, 83 yard Louisville drive. A 27 yard Jones to Burick connection setup the score just two plays before.

Canfield has now won two straight against Louisville after the Leopards won the previous five meetings before that. This is the first time the Cardinals have defeated Louisville at Bob Dove Field. The Leopards still lead the all-time series 5-4 and are 3-1 in games played at Canfield.
