Archbishop Hoban 21, Louisville 10

The Louisville Leopards Varsity Football Team fell to the host Archbishop Hoban Knights 21-10 in a one half scrimmage Thursday Night at Dowed Field.

With the score 21-3 in their favor, the 3-time defending state champion Hoban Knights weren’t satisfied. They used two timeouts on defense with under three minutes to go to buy them as much time as possible to run their two minute offense. After a Leopard punt, the Knights started at their own 15 and began to march. They traveled 59 yards on 6 plays before the Louisville defense stopped them on third down forcing a field goal try.

The attempt missed wide left with 43 seconds left in the contest. Backed up on their own 26 with no timeouts left, it would have been easy for the Leopards to pack it in. After all it was only a scrimmage and they were facing a worthy foe that had laid the lumber several times throughout the night. But that’s not Louisville Football.

The relentless Leopards offense took charge on their final drive traveling 74 yards in just 34 seconds of game time. Quarterback Colton Jones hit Wide Receiver Hunter Selander for a quick 11 yards to the left sideline to start the drive. After an incompletion, Jones threaded the needle on a pass to Broc Pickens who was amongst a crowd of four defenders. Pickens found a seam and sprinted for a 48 yard gain to the Knights 14. A late hit on the next play cut the Leopards distance to the goal line in half. On the next play, Jones lofted a pass to the left corner of the endzone that found the outstretch hands of Selander over the seemingly conjoined defensive back. Selander held on, got two feet in, and celebrated as Louisville broke double digits with just 9 seconds to play.

The Leopards got on the board earlier with a methodical 11 play, 65 yards drive. Jones completed 3 first down passes on the first 6 plays of the series. He hit Ezekiel Changet for the first, Pickens for a pair, and Carter Rode for another. A penalty allowed Louisville three goal-to-go attempts, but none reached pay dirt. The field goal team came on and Kicker Travis Pape blasted a 24 yard field goal through the uprights to break the shutout.

The second LHS drive of the content also showed a lot of promise. From their own 44, the scrappy Leopards converted a 3rd-and-12 on an 18 yard strike from Jones to Grayson Beamer. Then they converted a 4th-and-8 when Dillon Rebuck hauled in a another precise pass from Jones. Louisville could inch no further after that though as the march stalled at the Hoban 25 when a 4th-and-12 pass was batted away in the endzone.

The Leopards defense played well considering the talent and speed on the other side of the ball. Jason Goard and Travis Jones both had sacks for Louisville.

The real test begins next Friday at Canfield.
