Leopards Double Up Hillsdale 8-4, Now Best Start in Team History – Softball
Louisville 8, Hillsdale 4
The Louisville Leopards Varsity Softball Team doubled up the host Hillsdale Falcons 8-4 in the final game of a tri-header at Hillsdale Saturday Afternoon. With the two victories on the day, Louisville is now off to their best start in team history with a mark of 7-0 to begin the season.
Lead-off hitter Sydney McKeever batted 3-for-4 with a double and 3 runs scored. She also continued her stolen base streak by snagging a bag in her sixth consecutive game. Kaycee Ollis, Shae Thomas, and Teagan Rice all hit 2-run doubles in the game.
Thomas doubled on a fly ball to center in the third to give the Leopards an early 2-0 cushion. Rice doubled to left to double the Louisville lead and Thomas brought her home via a sacrifice fly later in the inning to make it 5-0. Ollis doubled to center in the sixth and an error allowed her to make the inside-the-park round trip to put LHS ahead 8-0.
Hillsdale cut the Leopard lead in half with a 4-run sixth inning. Sydney Long’s double to left brought home Hallee Smetzer for the Falcons first run. Miscues by the Louisville defense allowed Hillsdale to plate the other runs. Hattie Stamen finished with 2 of the Falcons 5 hits on the afternoon.
In the circle for the Leopards, Sarah Cantley threw a complete game, gave up 1 earned run on 5 hits, and struck out 11. The victory was her sixth of the season as she now improves to 25-6 for her career.
Louisville’s 7-0 record eclipses their previous best 6-0 starts in 1996 and 2017. The 1996 squad dropped their seventh game to the defending state champion Springfield Spartans 6-2. In 2017, the Leopards were undone at Canfield 8-6 to halt their bid for 7-0. Louisville will look to extend their hot start against some stiff competition to start next week’s schedule. They play Carrollton at home on Monday, travel to West Branch on Tuesday, and then host the 8-time state champion North Canton Hoover Vikings on Wednesday.
