Louisville 58, West Branch 39

The Louisville Leopards controlled the game from start to finish in rout to a 58-39 victory over the West Branch Warriors Tuesday Night.  Owen Gramoy had scored 13 points, Toby Minster added 12, and Michael Schooley also dropped in 10 as the Leopards won their fourth straight NBC game.

The Leps doubled up the Warriors in the first quarter thanks to great play on both ends by Mitch Sluss and Gramoy.  Sluss had two steals and nailed a three-pointer, while Gramoy took the ball right out of the hands of West Branch point guard Austen Rekolt before taking it to the house for the easy lay-in.  Gramoy also banged home a three early on in the first period as the Leps took a 16-8 lead heading into the second period.

The Leopards fed the big man underneath in the second quarter, as all five of the Leopards buckets came from Schooley, Minster, and Rocco Buccasso.  For West Branch, Tyler Rockwell poured in 12 of his game-high 19 points in the first half, but Louisville still maintained a 27-18 lead going into the break.

In the second half, West Branch took advantage of some sloppy Louisville offense and pulled to within 31-24 with 3:10 left in the third quarter.  However, Louisville answered by clamping down on defense and executing on offense. Minster poured in 6 more points from the field and Gramoy had a quarter high 7 points thanks to another one of his famous three-balls, and also another steal and score.

In the final period, the Leopards began to pull their starters out one-by-one and let the backups play.  Louisville played even with West Branch in the fourth quarter to cruise to a 58-39 victory.  Louisville is now 5-3 on the year.

Jalen Shelton dribbled the length of the court in six seconds, pulled up at the free throw line, and watched his shot hit the back of the rim and backboard before bouncing home to give the West Branch Warriors a 57-56 victory.  Just before that shot, Jake O’brien hit a jumper with his foot grazing the three-point line to give Louisville a 56-55 lead with 6.4 left on the clock.  That’s how close we were to going to a third overtime. O’brien led all scorers with 20 points for the Leopards, while Shelton and Jake Griffith poured in 16 each for West Branch.

A flurry of missed opportunities at the end of regulation sent the game into the extra period tied at 47-47.  Points were at a premium in the extra period and a huge defensive swat by O’brien at the end of the first overtime delayed the eventual heartbreak for the Leps.  The lost snaps the Leopards undefeated season as they fall to 7-1.
