Louisville 72, Northwest 62

The Louisville Leopards boys basketball team turned a 36-25 halftime deficit into 72-62 win Friday Night at Northwest.  Owen Gramoy led the Leps with 19 points, while Rocco Buccasso and Toby Minster each added 14.

Surprisingly it was the Leopards that took control of the game first.  Two three-pointers by Gramoy and suburb defense in the paint by Minster gave the Leopards a 13-4 advantage.  But, Northwest countered with a 15-0 run in the final 2:45 to take a 19-13 lead going into the break.

The Leopards continued to struggle offensively in the second quarter and Northwest continued to capitalize.  Three-pointers by Cory Hoffman and Shane Hippli gave the Indians their biggest lead of the game at 29-15.  Steals by Buccasso and Gramoy, and six made free throws kept Louisville in the game.  Indians led at the half 36-25.

When all seemed lost after the first half, the Leopards went on a tear to start the third quarter.  Michael Schooley made 1-of-2 free throws with the second one taking a wild bounce back to the Leps.  Minster then found Schooley for the lay-in.  Schooley finished with 10 points on the night.  Buccasso then got a swat on the other end before Gramoy hit a shot from NBA range.  36-31.  The Leps then got another stop on defense, before Gramoy took it coast-to-coast and finished his trip with an easy lay-in.  On the Leps next possession Gramoy turned disaster into points.  He nearly had the ball stolen from him, but retrieved it and lobbed a pass from half court to a wide open Minster for two more.  Finally, the Leps got the ball back and Mitch Sluss drove to the hoop and dropped it in the bucket.  Just like that the Leopards led 37-36.  Not pleased with the Leopards 14-0 run, Northwest coach Mike Lower called time.  The two teams traded scores for the rest of the quarter and it was 49-46 Leopards heading into the final period.

Schooley set the tone early in the fourth quarter by driving to the rack for a layup and making the “and one” to put the Leopards up 52-46.  Northwest battled back for a little bit, but the Leopards offense destroyed them in the paint.  Buccasso and Schooley combined for 14 points and the Leopards hit 7-of-9 free throws in the final quarter to seal their first victory of the season.
