Leopards Hang On in 7th to Down Hoover 6-5
Riley Groves to Mike Kelly Double Play in the Sixth
Louisville 6, North Canton 5
Louisville scored six runs in the second inning and survived a seventh inning Hoover rally to defeat the Vikings 6-5 Monday evening at Louisville High School.
The Leopards only managed two hits for the entire game, but they were timely ones. Joey Duckworth doubled to lead-off what turned out to be a damaging second inning for the Leps. Gabe Cozy walked next and Jordan Hughes reached base on error to load the bases with nobody out.
Bases loaded walks to Connor Ruffier and Riley Groves gave Louisville a 2-0 advantage. Mike Kelly would then double that advantage with a line drive single to center scoring both Hughes and Groves.
Another error after a fly out allowed Ruffier to score and Kelly then crossed the plate on a passed ball. 6-0 Leopards.
On the mound Duckworth pitched six solid innings giving up 3 runs (2 earned), 3 hits, and striking out 3.
The Vikings made things interesting in the seventh inning as they loaded the bases with no one out trailing by three runs. After a free pass brought a run home to make it 6-4, Dom Iero hit a screaming drive to left field. Ruffier at first appeared to make a diving grab, but dropped the ball. The runner on third tagged and came home even though no tag was needed. Ruffier threw the ball to Groves and touched the bag because the Louisville coaches thought the runner had left early. However, that in fact should have been a force out since the ball was dropped and the runner originally starting at second never went to third. After a quick throw down to second where two Hoover runners were standing and a long debate, the umpires ruled the runner originally on second was out via running out of the baseline. The runner from third scored and the game continued.
It was all for not. Kelly, who came in to pitch the Leopards out of the jam, got the final Hoover batter to pop out to center field ending the game and giving Louisville the 6-5 upset of their longtime rival.
