Leps Guarantee 23rd Straight Non-Losing Season With Win At Salem

Trey Hayford Louisville Leopards Vs. Salem Quakers 2012

Video Highlights

Louisville 43, Salem 26

Trent Ohman rushed for 199 yards & 4 touchdowns and Trey Hayford ran for 153 yards & 2 touchdowns as Louisville won at Reilly Stadium Friday Night.  The Leopards 43-26 win over the Quakers improves their overall record to 5-4 overall and guarantees them their 23rd straight non-losing season.

The Leopards defense sent the Quakers in reverse during the first series of the contest.  Dyland Kline and Mike Weiss combined to sack Salem Quarterback Trace Jenkins and force a 4th-and-14.  On the ensuing play, Gary Anile stormed in to block the Quaker punt attempt and Josh Brown recovered & returned the ball to the Salem 12 for the Leopards.  After the offense failed to reach the endzone, Merrick Storlie booted through this fifth field goal of the season from 25 yards away to give the Leopards a 3-0 lead.

The Leopards scored thrice in the second quarter.  The seemingly trapped Ohman weaved his way in and out of Salem’s punt coverage for a 27 return to the Quaker 49.  Five Beatty's Sports 2012 Football Shirtplays later he crossed the goal line from 14 yards away to put the Leps up 9-0.  Then Storlie, who missed his first extra point of the season after the touchdown, redeemed himself by kicking and recovering an onside kick at the Salem 48.  Louisville proceeded to drive 48 yards in 10 plays before Ohman scored on a sweep to the right side of the endzone.  Louisville failed to score on the two point conversion, but maintained a 15-0 lead with 8:31 left in the second quarter.

The next Salem drive ended at the Louisville 38 when Garret Yoder stormed past the Quaker blockers to halt Salem Quarterback Trace Jenkins short on a 4th-and-3.  Five plays later, Hayford shot through a seam in the right side of the Salem defense for a 52 yard touchdown run.  Hayford would later run to the left side for a 21 yard score in the third quarter to cap off a 7 play, 67 yard drive.  This gave Louisville a commanding 29-0 lead with 9:28 left in the third.

Back-to-Back long drives by the Leopards and Quakers followed to light up the scoreboard.  Salem receiver Brenden Webb caught a 4 yard fourth down touchdown pass from Jenkins to conclude a 15 play, 77 yard drive.  The drive featured not only the fourth-and-goal conversion, but two other third and long conversions.  Ohman answered for Louisville by gashing the defense with two long runs before he scored from 5 yards out.  The track meet was not over there though, as Salem’s Haeden Panezott returned a squib kick 65 yards for a touchdown on the next play to cut the deficit to 36-14 before the third quarter ended.

If the third quarter was a fireworks show, the fourth quarter was the grand finale.  Ohman dazzled the crowd with his fourth touchdown of the night just 73 seconds into the final frame.  He took a low snap, busted two would be sacks, and then followed his blocks to literally walk into the endzone for his 9th total touchdown of the season.  The short 20 yard drive was setup by 63 yard kick return by Alex Hollifield immediately after Panezott had returned a Leopard kickoff for a touchdown.

With the game out of  reach, Salem managed to score two additional touchdowns in a span of 23 seconds.  Jenkins connected with Marcus Crittenden for touchdown passes of 3 and 34 yards.  The key to the lightning fast scoring was an onside kick recovery by the Quakers in between their two touchdowns.  Salem failed to score on either conversion attempt to leave the score at 43-26.

The Quakers managed to get inside the Louisville 5 yard line two other times late in the game, but the Leopards slammed the door shut.  First, Charles Beamer and Jon Grimm merged to sack Jenkins in the backfield on a 4th-and-Goal from the 1.  Then with less than a minute left in the contest, Beamer intercepted a screen pass on a play that began at the Louisville 4.  The Senior linebacker returned the pick 77 yards to the Salem 14 before he was finally tackled.  The rainy game mercifully ended a play later with the Leopards victorious by a count of 43-26.

While the Leopards celebrated the end of their two game losing streak, other games ending around the state eliminated Louisville from playoff contention for the third straight season.  Louisville does however have a chance to keep their string of winning seasons alive (Since 2007) as they host Canton South on Senior Night next Friday.  Canton South and the rest of the NBC (except for Marlington) were eliminated from playoff contention Friday as well.
