Louisville 41, Marlington 20

The Louisville Leopards erased a 20-3 deficit with 38 unanswered points to defeat the visiting Marlington Dukes 41-20 Friday. With the victory, Louisville is alone in first place in the NBC and improves to 8-0, 5-0. Quarterback Connor Zwick led the Leopards by completing 9 of 15 passes for 192 yards & 2 touchdowns and also ran the ball 31 times for 154 yards.

The Dukes took a 17-point advantage early on in the contest. Chris Andrews ran back an interception 44 Beatty's Sports Leopard Skin Grey Hoodieyards for a touchdown to open the scoring. Then Jake Walker caught a 5 yard touchdown pass from Shawn Kirk to end another scoring drive that was setup by a 74 yard run by Adam Blake. Marlington would then start the second quarter with a 7 play 50 yard drive capped off by a 3 yard touchdown run from Kirk.

The Leopards responded immediately and not only got back in the game, but took the lead at halftime. On the third play of the ensuing drive, Zwick found Andy Minster down the left sidelines five yards ahead of the nearest Dukes defender. Minster caught the pass and his speed did the rest for a 73 yard score. He would finish as Louisville’s top receiver with 5 catches for 85 yards.

Minster was not finished though as he became the passer on Louisville’s next score five minutes later. Zwick took the snap and pitched the ball back to Minster who reversed the field. Minster then threw a 12 yard touchdown pass to a wide open Bryce Mathie who was wide open in the right side of the endzone. The play capped off an 8 play, 74 yard drive. Key plays on the drive included a 16 yard Zwick to Kyle Bast connection, a first down run by Zwick on 3rd-and-6, and a 23 yard run by Zwick to the Marlington 12. Bast would finish with 82 yards on 3 catches for the Leps.

The Leopards caught another break on the following kickoff when Jake Mathie stole the ball from the Dukes returner to setup Louisville on the Marlington 28. Three plays later Zwick hit Alex Hollifield for a 25 yard touchdown pass on 3rd-And-7. One last stop by the Leopards defense kept them ahead 24-20 at halftime.

Louisville dominated the second half to take the game. Marlington only managed to move the chains one time and that did not come until 2:21 left in the contest. The Leopards defense forced 3 three-and-outs and Louisville’s offense held the ball for 16:13 in the second half.

Louisville started the second half with a championship drive. They drove 65 yards on 12 plays taking up nearly half of the third quarter before Walter Schrock scored from 5 yards out. Schrock would finish the evening with 20 carries for 87 yards.

The Leopards put together two more long scoring drives to put the game out of reach. Jordan Hughes kicked a 26 yard field goal to cap off a 9 play, 73 yard drive. Hughes also made a 33 yard field goal in the first quarter. Louisville’s final scoring drive ate up 5:59 on 13 plays that went for 76 yards. Dakota James scored on a 2 yard touchdown run to give the Leopards a 41-20 advantage.

With the win, Louisville is now 41-5 against Marlington all-time which includes a 23-1 record at home. The Leopards can clinch at least a share of the NBC next week with a win at Alliance. Unofficially, Louisville is now in 5th place in the DIII, Region 7 playoff standings.
