Leopards Defeat Two Breeds of Warriors, Baseball/Softball Win!

SOFTBALL

Louisville 4, West Branch 1

Desi Givens batted a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate driving in one run and scoring another to lead the Lady Leps over the West Branch Warriors 4-1 on a muddy field Thursday evening in Beloit.  Chandler Rice, who followed her in the lineup, went 3-for-4 at the plate with a triple.

A two-out RBI single by Carlee Baumgardner brought home Givens in the first inning to give Louisville the early lead.  But West Branch answered with back-to-back doubles in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at 1-1.  However, pitcher Brittany Flanigan would shutout the Warriors for the remainder of the game, holding them to just seven total hits and striking out five.

In the second inning, Annie Woolf reached base after being hit by a pitch and afterward stole second on a tricky play.  Brooke Lehmiller struck out and proceeded to run down the first baseline as all the Lady Leopards do after strike three is called.  West Branch was confused defensively, thinking that Lehmiller could take first base since the catcher failed to catch the pitch.  The deception lasted long enough for Woolf to slide safely into second.  Flanigan followed with a single and then Emily Isla’s hit found grass in left field to score Woolf.  Then Givens singled up the middle bringing home Flanigan, but the pinch-running Ashley Horton was thrown out at home on the play to end the inning at 3-1 Leopards.

The Lady Leps third inning started with Rice banging a hit all the way to the fence in center, which landed her on third with a triple.  Baumgardner bunted on base safely with the Warrior defense’s attention occupied on Rice at third.  Baumgardner then stole second base uncontested to put two Leps runners into scoring position with no outs.  However, the West Branch shortstop made a great stab on a Jordan Monnot rip and then threw out Rice who did not have time to tag up at third.

The Leps would still manage to scrap a run out of the inning though as they loaded the bases for Lehmiller.  She hit a bloop down the first base line that found the perfect spot to catch West Branch out of position.  The hurried flip exchange to first base fell incomplete and Baumgardner scored on the play.  After a low stab earlier, the West Branch shortstop leaped up and snagged a would be base hit away from Flanigan to end the inning.

The Lady Leps offense failed to muster anymore runs for the rest of the game, but their defense held West Branch off the scoreboard for the remainder of the contest.  Louisville cruised to a 4-1 win to take sole possession of first place in the NBC at 6-1.  West Branch’s only two conference losses are to the Leopards, while Carrollton remains the only other two-loss team.
