Leopards Crush Carrollton 43-7

FULL VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS:

Louisville 43, Carrollton 7

In his starting debut at quarterback, Joey Duckworth was 13 of 21 passing for 232 yards, threw three touchdown passes, and ran in another to lead the Leopards to a convincing 43-7 victory over the Carrollton Warriors Friday Night at Louisville Leopards Stadium.  Lucas Poyser found the endzone twice on the ground in helping give Louisville their first winning streak of the season.

Each team’s opening possession ended in a fourth down stop deep in the opposing team’s territory.  Then Louisville struck fast on their next drive when Duckworth found a wide open Dillon Stertzbach who took it to the house for a 65 yard touchdown.  It would be his only catch of the night, but it put the Leps up 7-0.

Carrollton’s next drive would end when senior defensive lineman Trey Province alertly recovered a fumble on the Louisville 32-yard-line.  However, the Leps failed to move the ball and were forced to punt.  However, the snap sailed a little high on punter Alex Schooley and he tried to make the best of it by running to the right side.  The 4th-and-10 effort came up short giving the Warriors the ball inside Leopards Territory.

The Warriors began to march on a 5 play 46 yard drive.  A 27-yard run by Carrollton runningback Jake Peterson put the Warriors in the redzone.  Peterson finished the evening as the Warriors leading rusher with 16 carries for 96 yards.  However, it was Carrollton quarterback Damon Anderson that slithered up the middle ending the drive with a 4 yard touchdown run to tie the game at 7-7.

Louisville would respond with a hard nose 6 play 40 yard drive that ended with an 11-yard touchdown run by Poyser.  Then, in a deja vu play from the game last week, holder Jeremy McQuilkin rolled out for a two-point conversion.  Only this time he ran it in himself rather than completing a pass to give the Leps a 15-7 advantage.

After a short Warriors possession, Stertzbach put Louisville in position for another scoring drive returning a punt 45 yards past midfield.  Trent Ohman made nice grab to inch the Leps closer.  A pass interference call helped Louisville continue their drive before Billy Lairson caught a pass to set Louisville up at the 5-yard-line.  Poyser powered his way into the endzone on the next play for his second score of the night.  Poyser finished with 14 carriers for 54 yards on the night and the Leopards had a 22-7 lead with 0:44 remaining in the half.

After the break the Leopards defense clamped down.  Carrollton did not gain one first down in the second half and unofficially sacked Anderson five times.  Cory Neff and Gary Anile brought the Carrollton quarterback down in the backfield two times each and Jake Sluss took him down once as well.  The Warriors did gain 166 yards on the ground, but most of that gain came early.  Carrollton was just 1-of-5 passing for 7 yards and Louisville linebacker Charles Beamer also intercepted a pass late.  Once Carrollton became one dimensional, Louisville stuffed the run and blanked the Warriors for the final three quarters.

Meanwhile, the Leopards offense didn’t lose any steam.  A circus juggling 53-yard touchdown catch by Ohman from Duckworth made it 29-7.  Then on the next drive, Duckworth lobbed a perfect ball to Ohman who made the 22 yard catch on 4th-and-4 near the right sideline.  A pass interference penalty was called on the play, but Ohman and the Leopards didn’t need the call.  The Junior wide receiver finished the night with 8 catches for 131 yards.

Two plays later Duckworth shot a laser to Gavin Lovejoy who hauled it in for a 14 yard touchdown.  Time seemed to stand still quite literally when Duckworth scored on a 4-yard touchdown run to make it 43-7.  After he scored the time scoreboard still read 12:00 left in the 4th quarter.  Duckworth may not have made time literally stand still, but he seemed to freeze the Carrollton defense all night long with his performance helping the Leopards improve to 4-3.

NEXT UP: The Leopards will travel to West Branch to take on the Warriors on Friday, October 14 at 7:00 PM. Be sure to come back to Leopard Nation later in the week to get an in-depth preview on the game and series history.
