Leopards Can Clinch Playoff Birth With Victory at Alliance

Louisville Leopards Football 2013

The Louisville Leopards Varsity Football team can clinch their first playoff birth since 2009 with a victory over Alliance Friday. They do not need any help this week in order for this to happen. How can I be so sure? I will explain to you why this is possible below.

Coming into Week 9 Division III, Region 7 has 17 teams still alive according to joeeitel.com. A Louisville Beatty's Sports Leopard Skin Grey Hoodievictory at Alliance would guarantee them a minimum of 23.0500 at the end of the season. This is the worse possible scenario for the Leopards with every possible opponent they have beaten falling in weeks 9 and 10 in a way that would give them the least amount of points (I have also factored in the NBC schools that play each other with the best Division team beating the lower Division team for less points and Canton South defeating Salem this week). This scenario also suggests that the Leps lose at Canton South next week as well. Keep in mind this is only a scenario.

The Leopards 23.0500 minimum points would be greater than seven of the Region 7 team’s maximum points if those teams won out. This leaves 10 possible teams (including Louisville) with 8 spots up for grabs. If Louisville defeats Alliance, who is also in their Region, then the Aviators maximum possible points would be 22.5000. This is less than the Leopards 23.0500 and thus we are down to 9 teams for 8 playoff spots. This does not mean that Alliance would be eliminated, it just means that they cannot finish ahead of Louisville.

The next lowest possible maximum point total comes from Tallmadge. If the Blue Devils win out their maximum amount of points would be 23.5500, which is greater than Louisville’s minimum points if they defeat Alliance. But here’s the catch. Both Tallmadge and Louisville defeated Ravenna this season. Therefore, whatever points Ravenna earns for Tallmadge will also be given to Louisville.

Confused yet? Let me explain. If Ravenna loses out then Louisville will finish with a minimum of 23.0500 points and Tallmadge will finish with a maximum of 22.5000 points. If Ravenna wins out Tallmadge will finish with their maximum of 23.5500 points, but Louisville will also get those points and finish with a minimum of 24.1000 points. If Ravenna splits, the same thing occurs Louisville still finishes ahead of Tallmadge Therefore, if the Leopards beat the Aviators Friday then Tallmadge cannot finish ahead of them and Louisville will clinch a playoff birth.

There are two weeks left of football and a lot can happen, but the bottom line is if the Leopards win Friday then they will be in the state playoffs.
