Late Goals by Baughman, Storlie Lift Lady Leps Past Alliance

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS:

Louisville 3, Alliance 1

Pressure built and built and built, then finally the volcano erupted.  After controlling the ball and nearly scoring on several possessions during the first 32 minutes of the second half, the Lady Leopards burst through to score two goals in the final 8 minutes in defeating the Alliance Aviators 3-1 at Louisville Leopards Stadium Wednesday night.

Louisville scored first less than five minutes into the contest.  Mackenzie Storlie shot a pass towards the center of the penalty box, but it was deflected by an Alliance defender.  The deflection ended up in the back of the Alliance net and Storlie was given credit for the goal.

Alliance scored their only goal of the game  just past the midway point of the first half, but both team’s defenses prevailed the rest of the half keeping the game knotted at 1-1.

Louisville controlled the ball for most of the second half , but watched opportunity after opportunity go by the wayside.  Louisville out-shot Alliance 23-14 and had 8 corner kicks to just 4 by the Aviators.  But, several near-goal opportunities failed to find the net.

Finally, with less than eight minutes remaining the Leopards were given another chance on a corner kick.  But just like before Alliance booted the ball out of the penalty box seemingly out of danger.  But Leopards defender Kelly Miller retrieved it and found forward Rachel Baughman wide open 30 yards from the goal.  Baughman zoomed past three defenders and planted it into the left side of the net just past the outstretched arms of the Alliance goalie to give Louisville the lead with just 7:32 remaining.

The Lady Leps doubled their lead minutes later when Sarah Jaroszyk dribbled hard down the left side of the field.  She then fluttered a pass towards the net and a sliding Storlie exploded the ball into the net for her second score of the contest.  Louisville hung on the rest of the way to win 3-1 over an Alliance team that was in second place in the NBC coming into the night.

On defense, Louisville goalie Becca Springman put up a wall for the Alliance offense in grabbing nine saves.  The Leopards are now 9-5 overall on the year and conclude conference play with a 4-3 record.  Louisville also improves to 3-4-1 against the Aviators all-time.
