Lady Leopards Seniors Honored, but Lions Spoil Night

It wasn’t how the story was supposed to end.  After Louisville rallied to take a 2-1 set lead, the Lions answered back taking the final two sets to spoil Senior Night 18-25, 25-20, 25-20, 23-25, 8-15 at Louisville Middle School Thursday evening.

Offensively Brittany Lowry was the lead server for the Leps with 12 points, Molly Brown had 13 kills, and Maddie Gramoy had 38 assists.

Defensively, Brown had 24 digs and Danielle Baker had three blocks.

After falling in the first set, Louisville jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second set.  But, the Lions roared right back with a run of their own to cut the Leopard lead to 6-5.  The two sides exchanged possessions before Louisville ripped off 7 straight points.  Minerva would get within 23-20, but a timeout by Head Coach Jodie Cress fired the Lady Leps to take the set 25-21.

Louisville again took the early advantage in the third set, but the Lions would tie the score back up at 15-15.  The Lady Leps scored four straight times and were seemingly comfortably ahead.  But there was no sleeping on these lurking Lions as they copied the Leps to tie the game at 19.  Another timeout by Cress was followed by Louisville scoring 6 of the next 7 points to take the set 25-20.

Minerva and Louisville battled back and forth during the fourth set before the Lions broke loose for a 15-11 advantage.  Louisville scored the next three points and the two teams exchanged points from there.  With Minerva ahead 23-20, the Lady Leps reeled off three straight points to tie the game at 23-23.  Minerva was on the brink of defeat when their head coach called a timeout.  This proved to be the turning point of the contest as Minerva scored the next two points to win the set 25-23.

The Minerva momentum carried over into the final set as the Lions leaped to a 10-3 advantage.  Louisville played even with the Lions after that, but the hole had already been dug.  Louisville fell 15-8 snapping an 8 game winning streak.  The Lady Leps are now 2-4 in matches that have gone beyond three sets and 0-2 in matches that have gone all the way to the fifth set this season.

It was a bitter end to an up and down 14-8 regular season that saw the Lady Leps finish 3rd in the final NBC Final Standings.  But as one season ends, another begins in one week, and this new season is the one that really counts.

Leopard Nation would like to give a shout out to the three Senior Lady Leopards Volleyball players Danielle Baker, Molly Brown, and Kristen Vanicek.  You have truly worked hard and have had great careers at LHS.  You will definitely be missed, but we also know that this is just the beginning of a bright future ahead for you.  Good luck in all you do and make your dreams a reality. -Leopard Nation
