The past? You can forget it.  As the time ticked down to 0:00 at Marlington Soccer Stadium the Leopards “Jungle” student section cheered “We Made History!” repeatedly.  It was a fitting cheer for a victory over Marlington that had escaped the Lady Leopards Soccer program since its inception in 2003.  Louisville won the contest 5-2 Wednesday evening.

An outside looker would have thought Louisville was the dominate program in girls soccer over the years if they had seen the first half.  The Lady Leopards scored three goals and had several other close calls just miss the net in the opening 40 minutes.  Sophomore Rachel Baughman scored a pair of those goals and Freshman Devin Kring added the other.

Sami Keefe fluttered a pass just outside the center of the penalty box to Baughman who manuvered through a crowd of orange traffic and found a clear path for a shot.  Her kick went off the right post and into the net to give the Leopards their first score against Marlington since 2009.

Lizz Stefanik setup the second goal by leading Baughman to the right with a pass inside the penalty area.  Baughman then quickly Beatty's Sports Grey Louisville Athletics T-Shirtshifted gears left with her shot that glided into the far left side of the net.  The final goal of the half was setup by beautiful passing from Keefe to Kring back to Keefe and to Kring again who stood to the right of the goal.  Kring snuck the ball across the goal line and past the Marlington goalie into the left side of the net to make it 3-0.

Great defense led by Kelly Miller, Tara Stevens, Jessica Hamsher, and 3 saves by goalie Becca Springman kept the Dukes scoreless for the better part of the second half.  Louisville, however, continued to pour on their attack and out-shot Marlington for the contest 41-7.  Louisville took a 4-0 lead with 17:35 remaining when Stevens found Stefanik on the right side of the goal box.  Stefanik faked right and then spun back left before planting the ball into the back of the net.

Marlington got on the board 1:43 later when a long shot by Jordan Sutton found the right side of the net.  The Dukes only other goal came with 3:02 left in the contest by Malea Stuffel.

The Leopards final goal of the contest came when Baughman charged down the left sideline and sent a shot into the goal box that deflected over to Sarah Jaroszyk.  Jaroszyk blasted the ball into the net to make it 5-1 Leopards with 13:10 left.  The Leopards substitutes joined the party after that and Louisville cruised to a victory over a long-time unbeatable nemesis.  The win leaves the Lady Leopards 5-1 overall on the year and more importantly 2-0 in the NBC.
