Lady Leopards Cry “Woolf” in Double Header Vs. Green

Game 1: Louisville 11, Green 1, 5 innings

Annie Woolf went 3-for-3 with a double, 3 RBI’s, and also scored 2 runs to help lead Louisville to an 11-1 five inning victory in the first game of Saturday’s double header against Green. Shelby Swigert also went 2-for-3 with a double, 3 RBI’s, and a run for the Lady Leps.

Louisville used a lot of “mushrooms” during a seven run fourth inning to bury Green.  According to one the Lady Leps, a “mushrooms” symbolize new life, in reference to the 1980’s Mario Brothers video game series in which mushrooms give you extra lives.  With two outs, Katie Cozy hit a short roller that stopped about 10 feet in front of the plate.  Cozy slid into first safely, barely beating the throw to first…Mushrooms.  Rice then hit a grounder to short and would have been out had the first baseman not dropped the ball…again new life.

Carlee Baumgardner scored as Rice reached first base still with two outs.  The Lady Leps have made teams pay all year with two outs and this scenario was no different.  Woolf next cracked a single to center that scored Brittany Flangian.  Then Swigert and Jordan Monnot each followed with 2-run singles to put Louisville up by double digits.  Finally, Amy Hoover hit a line drive down the right field line that sent home Monnot and landed Hoover on third with a triple.

The additional RBI that Hoover provided turned out to be crucial in ending the game early.  Green’s Heather Papp Beatty's Sports Spring Sports Logos Softballhomered to right-center in the top of the fifth to make it 11-1, but Green would not score again.  The home run was just 1 of 4 hits Flanigan gave up all game.  She pitched all 5 innings and struck out 3 in the process of picking up her 14th victory of the season.

The Lady Leopards also scored four runs earlier in the contest.  Cozy singled home Flanigan in the first inning to give Louisville an early 1-0 advantage.  The Lady Leps would not score again until the third inning when Woolf’s 2-run single brought home Flanigan and Rice.  Swigert then doubled home Woolf to make it 4-0 Lady Leopards.  Flanigan scored three runs in the contest, while Rice and Woolf each scored two.

The Lady Leopards 11-1 win was their 80th victory under Head Coach Chet Givens, which surpasses Rick Crislip (79-59) for the most coaching wins in Louisville Fastpitch history.  Below is a look at Louisville’s all-time coaching records:

Game 2: Louisville 9, Green 0

Annie Woolf went 2-for-3 with a 2-run homer and scored 3 runs to help lead the Louisville Lady Leopards past the Green Bulldogs in game two of a doubleheader early Saturday afternoon at the Diamond of Dreams.  Gianna Falcone also pitched a 7 inning shutout for the now 22-3 Lady Leps.

Louisville wasted no time in lighting up the scoreboard in the second contest.  Flanigan and Emily Isla singled aboard to start the game.  Then with one out, Rice hit a sacrifice fly to right field that allowed the sliding Flanigan to score from third.  After that, Woolf was hit by a pitch for the 11th time this season.  Leopard Nation could not locate the bullseye on her uniform, but we are fairly certain that vaporizes an already long-shattered singe-season school record for the HBP stat.  Next, Swigert squeaked a single past the second baseman and into right-center to bring home both Isla and Woolf.  3-0 Louisville.

In the circle, Falcone sent down the Bulldogs 1-2-3 in each of the first three innings and retired the first 10 batters she faced overall.  She also helped her own cause in the second inning with a one-out single.  Hoover replaced her as a courtesy runner and stole second.  Then Flanigan drove in Hoover to put the Lady Leps up 4-0.

Later in the third inning, Woolf crushed a pitch way over the fence in center-field for her first home run of the Beatty's Sports Spring Sports Logos Softballseason.  The two-run homer also scored Rice, who had reached base on a fielder’s choice.  Woolf is the ninth different Lady Leopard to homer this year as the team has now combined for 18 round-trippers this season.

The Leopards only other three runs came in the fifth inning.  For the second time this season, Falcone just missed a walk-off Grand Slam as she doubled off the fence in left field scoring Woolf for the third time in the contest and also Swigert.  After that, Brooke Cox provided the final run on an RBI groundout that brought home Monnot.

Louisville missed opportunities in the sixth and the seventh to seal the game via mercy, but the main outcome remained inevitable with Falcone dominating on the mound.  Louisville won the contest 9-0 and could very well meet Green for a third time in a span of four days on Tuesday in the Sectional Semifinals.  Green will host Canton Timken in the Sectional Semifinals Monday before the winner travels to Louisville the next day.
