Jackson 58, Louisville 53

Landrie Grace scored 8 of her game-high 19 points in the final quarter to help lead the Jackson Polar Bears to a 58-53 victory over the visiting Louisville Lady Leopards in the Jackson Holiday Tournament Saturday evening.  Jordan Monnot led the Lady Leps with 16, while Hannah Lemmon added 12 and Clara Lemmon poured in 10.

The Leopards stunned the home team by taking a 27-18 lead into halftime.  Hollyann Mullett scored 7 of her 8 points in the first half and the Lemmon sisters added 6 points each to build the Louisville advantage.

But, the Polar Bears froze the Leopards with an 11-2 run to start the second half to tie the game at 29-29.  Amy Schmidt scored all 12 of her points in a third period that saw Jackson put up a 24-Beatty's Winter Hoodiesspot.  Abby Duffy also scored 6 of her 12 points in the quarter as well.  Jackson would take a 42-37 lead into the final minute of the third quarter, but still Louisville bounced back.  Monnot hit the front end of a pair of free throws before missing the second.  Hannah Lemmon got the offensive board on the attempt and laid it off the glass to cut the deficit to 2.  Then an Emily Nees to Clara Lemmon fast break basket knotted up the score in the waning seconds of the quarter at 42-42.

Jackson then held Louisville scoreless for the first 4:35 of the fourth quarter and jumped ahead 50-42.  Grace produced a traditional three-point play and Shannon Sellars banged home a modern three-pointer during the run.  Sellars would also finish with 12 points for the Lady Bears.

Louisville botched opportunities in missing two 1-and-1 free throw attempts and making just 3 of 7 free throws total in the final period.  Yet, the Lady Leps did not die.  Hannah Lemmon scored on a behind the back layup and Monnot was fouled while making a basket of her own.  She hit home the extra free throw to cut the deficit to 50-47.

Then came the devastating blow.  Jackson’s Grace chanced an NBA-range three-pointer and it hit nothing but nylon to put Jackson back up by six.  Even with that devastating blow, the Polar Bears were not on solid ground yet.  Monnot made two free throws, Mackenzie Rankin banked home a basket, and Hannah Lemmon scored after grabbing a loose ball underneath the hoop to cut the Jackson lead to 55-53.

The Leopards would get the ball back, but would turn the ball back over to Jackson.  The Polar Bears converted 1 of 2 free throws on the other end to take a 3-point advantage.  Louisville failed to score on their final two possessions and Duffy added the clinching blow for Jackson on the other end.  The Polar Bears had captured their own tournament crown and dropped the Lady Leopards to 7-3.
