North Canton 25-25-25, Louisville 13-19-22

The Louisville Lady Leopards volleyball team dropped the first match in the newly renovated Louisville High School gymnasium 13-25, 19-25, 22-25 to rival North Canton early Saturday afternoon.

The 2012 campaign did not get off to a great start for the Lady Leps as they surrendered the first five points of the match to North Canton.  Louisville rallied back to cut the deficit to 7-5, but the Vikings were resilient as they scored the next seven points.  A Delaney Zwick block broke up the run, but North Canton took the next four points to take a commanding 18-6 lead.  The Vikings took the first set 25-13.

In the second set the Lady Leps found themselves in a similar scenario trailing 7-5.  Hoover ripped off two more points to take a 9-5 lead before Louisville rallied with three straight points highlighted by kills from Maddie Gramoy and Paige Lewis.  But, the Vikings would answer back in taking 7 of the next 8 points and a 16-9 advantage.  Jordan Monnot helped keep Louisville alive in the second set by adding 3 kills, 1 block, and 1 ace.  However, the closest the Leopards could get was 20-19 before North Canton took the set 25-19.

Louisville took a small 3-2 advantage to begin the third set, but that would be the furthest into any set that Hoover would trail during the contest.  The turning point of the set came when North Canton held a 8-7 advantage.  The Vikings spiked the ball over the net with shear force that almost guaranteed a kill.  But who Hoover did not account for was Mackenzie Begue who dug the ball up just inches from the ground.  While this looked to give the Leopards momentum, the Vikings won the rally to take a 9-7 advantage.  After one more Louisville score, the Vikings would take the next five points to take a 14-8 lead.

During the rest of the set the Lady Leps scored via a block from Lewis, an ace from Begue, & kills by Lewis, Brittany Lowry, Monnot, and Megan Stocker.  However, their effort would come up just short as Hoover took the set 25-22.  The sweep is North Canton’s third straight over Louisville in as many seasons.  The Vikings have taken four out of the last five meetings with the Leopards.

The schedule does not get any easier for Louisville either.  They host the defending 14-0 NBC Champion Salem Quakers Tuesday evening.

JV Video Highlights

Louisville 16-25-25, North Canton 25-19-20

Despite a tough 25-16 loss in the first set, the Lady Leopards JV squad rallied to defeated Hoover in the final two sets 25-19 and 25-20.  In the third an final set, Louisville trailed Hoover 10-7 before the Lady Leps ripped off 8 of the next 9 points to take a 15-11 lead.  The Lady Viks got as close as 22-20, but Louisville took the final three points of the contest and the match.

Freshman

First Point in the New Gym

North Canton 25-24-25, Louisville 19-26-19

After scoring the first points in the new gym, the Lady Leopards freshman squad fought hard but fell in the first set 25-19.  Louisville fended off North Canton in overtime of the second set 26-24, but the Vikings stormed back and copied the first set with a 25-19 win.
