SOFTBALL: Louisville 8, Marlington 1

Desi Givens whacked two 2-run home runs to lead the Lady Leopards to an 8-1 win over the Dukes Friday evening at Marlington High School.

The Lady Leps wasted no time getting on the board early as Givens rounded out the first due up with a two-run jack over the right-center fence.  Emily Isla, who had singled before Givens also scored on the play.

Chandler Rice got things going for Louisville in the third inning by cracking a double off the center field fence and then stole third base soon after.  Jordan Monnot then knocked her home with a double of her own to put the Lady Leps up 3-0.

Marlington’s only answer came in the bottom half of the inning when Jessie Gorman doubled home Brittany Tomello.  However, even the Dukes finest offensive play of the game had its fortunes turned over to the Leopards.  Givens threw home to the catching Isla, who tagged Marlington’s Brooke Dimit to end the inning and minimize the damage.  The run was the only one that freshman Louisville pitcher Gianna Falcone gave up all day.  She went distance, giving up just four hits and walking none.

The Leopards continued to cushion their lead in the fourth inning as both Shelby Swigert and Brooke Lehmiller singled to start the inning.  A single off the center field fence by Brittany Flanigan scored Swigert from second, before Lehmiller was thrown out at third on a bang-bang play, and Flanigan also took second in the process.  Next, Isla hit a bloop single to drive in Flanigan, and then Givens doubled her in to extend the Leopard lead to five.  However, Isla injured herself in sliding to the plate and was replaced by Anne Wolf for the remainder of the game.

The Louisville bats remained silent until the sixth inning when Flanigan banged her second hit of the game off the outfield fence landing her on second.  Had the wind been blowing out instead of in, Flanigan may have put two over the wall herself.  She finished 3-for-4 on the evening.  Givens followed two batters later with her second two-run blast of the game to put Louisville up 8-1, the count they would eventually win by.  Givens finished the game 3-for-4 with two dingers and five runs batted in.
