Girls Swimming Defeats McKinley For 1st Time, Boys Fall
The Lady Leopards defeated Canton McKinley for the first time in the history (of our known records) of the Louisville High School Girls Swimming program since its inception in 1980-81 at the C.T. Branin Natatorium Friday evening. The 94-76 victory left the Lady Leopards with an undefeated 8-0 record with 5 dual/tri-meets left to play.
Typically McKinley fields a diving team, while Louisville does not and that usually gives the Bulldogs an edge in points by the end of the meet. However, the waters were even this time because the team from Canton did not field any divers.
The Lady Leopards were paced Stephanie Brookens who along with the team, remained undefeated individually for the season. She again took first place in the 50 and 100 Freestyle races. Amy Yu also had two first place finishes for the Leps in the 200 IM and the 100 Butterfly, while Stephanie Horton continued to dominate in the 100 Breaststroke as she came in first as well.
The Lady Leps also won the 200 and 400 freestyle relay races. The two teams were comprised of Ashley Brookens, Rachel Morris, Audre Gonda, Angela Godwin, Stephanie Spehar, Amy Yu, Tina Yu, and Stephanie Brookens.
The boys fell to 4-4 on the season after they fell to the Bulldogs 120-56. Matt Campbell was out touched at the wall in the 50 freestyle picking up just his first loss individually on the season. However, Campbell redeemed himself in the 100 Freestyle with a time of 51.56 to capture the Leopards only first place finish for the evening. The last boys victory over McKinley was a 155-135 win that came on December 17, 1999.
