Girls Soccer Stunned by Blue Streaks in Final Seconds

Louisville 2, Lake 2

The Louisville Lady Leopards Girls Soccer team had a chance to do what the previous 11 LHS teams Beatty's Leopard Head Shirt 2015failed to do. However, the visiting Lake Blue Streaks stunned the Leopards by scoring with 2 seconds remaining to force a 2-2 tie. Louisville is now 2-4-2 on the season following the draw.

The Lady Leopards took the lead first when Brianna Horton looped a one-hopper into the back of the net. Horton shot the ball from about 5 feet behind the left corner of the penalty box. The score gave Louisville a 1-0 lead with 7:25 left in the first half and they would ride that advantage into the break.

Lots of great defensed followed Horton’s score. Leopards Goalie Allie Bourne made several point blank saves in the box to keep the game close. Defenders Abigayle Baughman, Devin Kring, and Sydney Shankel were also there all night to keep the Blue Streaks at bay.

Lake managed to knot the game up at 1-1 with 21:05 left. In the box, Jessica Davis banged home a sho into the left side of the net for the Blue Streaks.

Louisville had a huge opportunity to take the lead when a Maddie Berkebile pass at midfield sprung Hannah Baughman free on a fast break. However, the Lake goalie was right there to bat it away with 10:35 to go.

Hannah Baughman got another fast break opportunity a few minutes laster. Abigayle Baughman intercepted the Blue Streaks inbound on the Leopards end of the field. She booted it toward Hannah Baughman who got control of it at midfield. Hannah juked out a Lake defender to gain some space before stopping on a dime at the top of the penalty box. She then arched the ball into the top of the net to give Louisville a 2-1 lead with just 8:45 left to play.

The Leopards would hold the Blue Streaks off the scoreboard until the final seconds of play. Lake crossed past midfield with just 15 seconds left and the ball ended up in the left corner of the Louisville end. The Blue Streaks Alexis Meffert gained control of the ball and pushed it to the center of the box. Abby Starkey booted the ensuing pass into the right side of the net for the game-tying score with just 2 ticks left.

With the tie, Louisville is now 1-10-2 against Lake all-time, which includes an 0-4-2 record at home. The Blue Streaks are unbeaten against the Leopards in 12 straight matches, with the only other non-victory being a 4-4 tie at Louisville Leopards Stadium in 2013. Louisville last beat Lake 3-1 in their first ever meeting back on October 11, 2004.

UP NEXT: The Lady Leopards will next travel to Marlington to take on the Dukes on Wednesday, September 16 at 7:00 PM.
