Girls Basketball Erases Early Deficit in Victory Over South
Louisville 50, Canton South 43
The Louisville Lady Leopards Girls Basketball team downed the visiting Canton South Wildcats 50-43 Wednesday Evening at LHS. With the win, Louisville is now an even 8-8 overall and improves to 6-4 in the NBC.
Abby Beaver scored 7 of her game-high 14 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Leopards. Alexa Oberster also broke double figures with 11 and both Sabryna Benzel & Sarah Lairson added 9 points a piece.
Louisville got off to a slow start as Canton South took a 12-2 lead with less than two minutes left in the first quarter. However, the Leopards caught fire to score the final 7 points of the period. Benzel scored on a big bucket, Oberster hit a 3-ball, and Beaver forced a steal that led to a basket by Danielle Walter.
The Wildcats extended their advantage to 17-11 in the second quarter before the Lady Leps came roaring back. Beaver’s drive and score in the waning seconds of the first half put Louisville ahead 28-27 at the break.
The Leopards then outscored the Wildcats 13-7 in the third period to take command of the contest. One key to their success was a 31-21 advantage on the glass. Benzel led all rebounders by pulling down a game-high 10. Grace Jackson and Lairson grabbed 6 boards a piece as well.
With the victory, Louisville has now downed Canton South in 9 of their last 10 meetings including the last 5 at home. The Lady Leopards now lead the all-time series 60-24 and hold a 32-10 advantage in the series at LHS.
UP NEXT: The Lady Leopards will next host the Minerva Lions on Saturday, January 31. JV will begin at 12:00 PM and Varsity will follow around 1:30 PM.
