The Leopards Freshman football team forced 5 turnovers to take a 38-0 halftime lead before cruising to a 45-8 victory over Marlington Thursday evening at Louisville Leopards Stadium. Quarterback Jake Adams threw 2 touchdown passes and ran for another to lead the Leopards.

Louisville got off to hot start when Dalton Deckered recovered the opening kickoff. Two plays later Frankie Falcone ran around the left side for a 29 yard touchdown run. With Stephen Kerzan’s extra point kick Louisville led 7-0.

Marlington, aided by a Leopard penalty on fourth down earlier in the drive, drove all the way down to the Louisville 25. On 4th-and-2, Daichi Castles stripped the ball carrier, picked up the fumble, and returned it the Louisville 43. On the ensuing play, Adams found Kerzan for a 35 yard gain and three plays later the two connected again for a 17 yard score. Kerzan’s extra point boot made it 14-0 Louisville.

After a Dukes possession, the Leopards were pinned on their own 1 yard line after a great punt by Marlington’s Garrett Floyd. But it did not phase the Leopards, Adams completed four consecutive passes on the drive to Brock Haren twice, Kerzan for another, and a 21 yard completion to Reis Rankin to the Marlington 1 yard line. After a play for a loss, Haren scored on a 4 yard touchdown run to put the Leopards up 20-0.

Louisville would profit off three takeaways and find the endzone three more times in the final seven minutes of the half. First Conner Bast intercepted a pass which led to a 17 yard touchdown run by Adams. Then Kyle Ashcraft repeated that feat with a pick of his own leading to another Adams to Kerzan touchdown pass on a 4th-and-5 play. Finally, with 34 seconds left in the half Castles stripped and returned another fumble 24 yards for a touchdown to give the Leps a 38-0 lead.

In the second half, Deckerd scored on a 61 yard touchdown run to the right side to put Louisville up 45-0. Marlington’s only scoring came on a 21 yard touchdown run by Floyd and a two point run by Austin Hershberger. Alec Jones ran back the ensuing kickoff 66 yards to the Dukes 23 yard line. With a continuous second half clock Louisville would not score again, but their statement was made none the less with a 45-8 NBC opening victory.
