Dukes Pull Away From Leopards in 4th, 55-45

Marlington Dukes Vs. Louisville Leopards Boys Varsity Basketball 1-6-2012

Marlington 55, Louisville 45

Jesse Carpenter scored 9 of his game-high 23 points in the final period as Marlington pulled away from Louisville 55-45 at LHS Friday night.  Mike Kelly and Alex Schooley led the Leopards with 10 points each, while Jake O’brien hit 3 three-pointers.

With 3:18 left in the game, the Leopards had just battled back to tie the game at 39-39.  Carpenter had just missed a three on the opposite end and O’brien came up with the rebound for the blue and white.  The hometown underdogs called a timeout and were looking to be patient with their possession or even stall out the clock.

The Dukes came out of the timeout with a baffling defense and stole the ball away three straight times.  Alex Williamson deflected the first steal and Shawn Kirk drove to the rack to give Marlington the lead.  Carpenter and Kirk then each picked off Leopard passes and turned them into points to make it 45-39.  Kirk finished the night with 12 points for the Dukes.

Louisville continued to battle back getting within four points twice thanks to buckets by Schooley and Ronnie Carter.  However, Marlington would hit 13 of 15 free throws in the quarter, including a 6 for 6 performance by Carpenter to close the game for the Dukes.

Carpenter was a nuisance from the start for Louisville.  He hit a three-pointer to open the contest and would crank home four altogether in the game.  A steal and score by Kirk gave Marlington a 5-0 lead to start the contest.

Louisville rallied back using the hot-hand of Kelly who scored 8 points in about an 85 second span. Kelly’s 2 three-pointers and another deep jumper in front of the arch put the Leopards up 10-7.

The Leopards downtown show would continue with a sequel starring O’brien who knocked down 3 three-pointers in the first half.  The Leopards made 5 of 13 shots from beyond the arch in the first half helping them take their biggest lead of the game at 23-19 midway through the second quarter.

However, the Dukes defense forced a few Leopards turnovers and they closed the half on a 10-1 run to take a 29-24 lead into the break.

Tough buckets by Bill Lairson and Schooley inched the Leopards closer in the third.  Then, Jeremy McQuilkin opened the fourth quarter by burying the only Leopards three-pointer of the second half.  The shot tied the game at 33 a piece, but Marlington pushed their lead back out to 37-33.  Buckets by Kyle Bast and Trevor Hostetler helped Louisville get back to 39-all before they called timeout with 3:18 to go.

The Dukes have now taken three out of the last four meetings against the Leopards and improve to an even 3-3 on the year, while the Leps fall to 2-7.  Louisville will look for their seventh straight victory over the Warriors of Beloit when they travel there Tuesday.
