Northwest 4, Louisville 3

Northwest took advantage of two penalty kick opportunites and added two more goals in earning a 4-3 victory over the Louisville Leopards on Saturday.

Harrison Raub and Riley Groves each scored first half goals for the Leopards who played an even 2-2 game with the Indians for the first 64 minutes of the contest.

The Indians took the back the lead on a penalty kick with 15:36 remaining and added an insurance goal with 9:57 left in the contest to take a two goal advantage.

Then things got crazy with 3:48 left to play.  The Leopards Kyle Baker headed a ball off a corner kick towards the net, but the Northwest defenders kicked it away in midair. Next thing everyone knew whistles were blowing and the Leopards side of the scoreboard had a “3” appear.  Soon after, the head referee conferred with the linesman on the north side of the field and overturned the call in the Indians favor.  But like a 2000 election recount, Leopards Head Coach John Henkel managed to convince the referee to go with his previous decision giving the goal back to Louisville.  The referee apologized to the Northwest players and told them that the call could not be overturned after it was made.

Northwest clamped down on defense and ran out the rest of the clock to capture a 4-3 win and drop the Leopards to 0-8 on the year.

UP NEXT: The Leopards will travel to Canton South to play the Wildcats on Tuesday, September 20 at 7:00 PM.
