All 15 Outs of Gianna Falcone’s No-Hitter

Game 1: Louisville 18, GlenOak 2, 5 innings

The Lady Leopards put together a 13-run second inning that propelled them to an 18-2 victory over the GlenOak Golden Eagles to start the season Saturday afternoon.

Things looked as gloomy as the weather when GlenOak’s lead-off hitter Dayanna Worley removed Brittany Flanigan’s second pitch of the season from the ballpark and over the left field fence to give the Golden Eagles an early 1-0 lead.  However, Flanigan settled down after that by fanning 10 Eagles, giving up just 2 more hits, and surrendering one other run the rest of the game.

Meanwhile, the Senior duo of Flanigan and Emily Isla reeked havoc on GlenOak all game long.  Flanigan helped her own cause by going 4-for-4 at the plate with a lead-off double and four runs.  Isla, who batted second behind Flanigan, also went 4-for-4 with three doubles, 4 RBI’s, and 3 runs scored.

Hitting third, freshman Katie Cozy led all Louisville players with 5 RBI’s, also hit a double, and scored twice herself.  Clean-up hitter Chandler Rice and Annie Woolf both cranked out three hits on the afternoon and crossed home plate a combined five times.  Six different Lady Leopards had steals in the game and Woolf had two of their seven total.

Gear Up with Beatty's SportsShelby Swigert’s sac fly in the first inning gave Louisville an early 3-1 lead.  Later Swigert would help preserve that lead with a beautiful diving catch in shallow right field.

In the second inning, Louisville had 17 at-bats and batted around the entire lineup with two outs.  The Leps scored 8 of their 13 runs in the inning after there were already two outs.

Carlee Baumgardner also added an RBI and Brooke Cox also scored once to cap off the Leopards merciless lineup.  The Lady Leps batted .581 as a team for the game and scored 10 of their runs with 2 outs.

Game 2: Louisville 10, GlenOak 0, 5 innings

Gianna Falcone threw a 5 inning no-hitter and the Lady Leopards did the rest as Louisville took the second game of the double header 10-0 Saturday afternoon.

Falcone was dominate from start to finish, but the scariest threat to her no-hitter came in the second at-bat of the ball game.  Amy Hoover caught the threat in left-center and the outfielders saw no action the rest of the day.

Falcone retired five hitters on strikes and most of the other 9 outs came from weak ground balls.  Her only blemish came in the fourth inning when she walked a batter after running the count full.  The Leopards fans questioned in disgust before Falcone sat down the final five hitters she faced.

The run support did not come as quickly or as stunningly as it had in the first game, but Louisville did enough to exercise the run rule.  Baumgardner and Flanigan led off the third inning with back-to-back doubles to break the scoreless tie.

Fittingly, the game officially ended in the fifth with the same duo combining to score the clinching run.  Flanigan’s clutch game-ending double scored both Falcone for the ninth run and Baumgardner for the tenth run.   The pair of Seniors hit 7-of-7 at the plate in the game, smacked four doubles, drove in three runs, and rounded the bases four times.  The lead-off hitter, Flanigan, batted 1.000 for the day by going 8-for-8 at the plate.

Before the game ended, Louisville used a 6-run fourth to break open the contest.  The Lady Leps batted around the lineup and brought 10 hitters to the plate altogether. Monnot and Swigert each reached base after being hit by pitches and Baumgardner later brought them home with a 2-out single to start the scoring.  Yes, once again Louisville shined brightly with two outs.

After that, a single by Flanigan brought home Baumgardner to make it 4-0 Leopards.  Isla then followed with a double to put both runners in scoring position and a Cozy single brought both of them home.  Rice then singled home Cozy to cap off the inning and put Louisville ahead 7-0.

After a 24-2 season last year, the 3-time defending NBC Champion Leopards’ hard work in the off-season is showing.  But even as they celebrated after a dominate opening performance, the 2012 Lady Leopards know that this is just one small step on their quest for Firestone.
